The Home of the Cone

I had this idea to create art prints where I play around with iconic city sites and turn them into something fun. I had a few different ideas regarding the Statue of Liberty, one of which was to replace the torch with a cone of ice cream. This is how ‘The Home of the Cone’ was born.

For this art print I used 4 different images. The main image was a photo of the Statue of Liberty. Then of course, I needed a photo of an ice cream. I wanted a swirly one with a fun colour and I wanted a waffle cone. I went through all the sites that offer absolutely free stock images (pexels, unsplash, pixabay and stockvault) but I just couldn’t find a picture that would measure up to the image that I had in my mind.

Luckily, I was able to find a pretty good image of a cone and another one of an ice cream and was able to marry them by doing a little extra editing.

After this I added this nice cloudy background image. The original background of the Statue of Liberty photo was just a blue sky but I found it a bit too plain. So I had to cut around the statue (yes, long and tedious work) and replace the background with this summery, dreamy picture.

Lastly, I had to make sure that the shadows look kind of realistic (the fingers needed to cast shade on the cone for example) and I also had to complete the palm because the original torch was much wider than the cone so I had to cut that bit out previously.

I couldn’t think of a cool name for this art work and asked Shaun who suggested to call it ‘The Home of the Cone’. It made me chuckle a bit and thought that it was just the perfect name for it.

Fun fact: the first ice cream cone was produced in 1896 by Italo Marchiony. Marchiony, who emigrated from Italy in the late 1800s, invented his ice cream cone in New York City.

We just couldn’t believe what a lucky coincidence that was!
