Hand-made Christmas cards

These Hand-made Christmas cards are the newest fruits of my creative mind and hands.

The inspiration for them actually came from the previous batch of name cards/ birthday cards I made for friends and family all of which had a monogram on the front with vertical lines surrounding it. I created these lines by cutting out vertical stripes from the front page of the card and this resulted in a really cool and clean geometric texture.

For these cards though I wanted to take that pattern idea one step further. I wanted to add horizontal elements to the vertical ones but I wasn’t sure how. Then my mind digged up a childhood memory of me finding some old, hand-made Christmas decorations in my aunty’s cupboard. They were these magnificient, 3D paper sculptures of stars feturing elements of thin paper stripes weaved together.

So I took a thick, white paper and marked it on two facing sides in every 3 millimetres. I connected these markings then cut out a lot of thin stripes with a utility knife. After that it was time to weave these stripes together. It did take quite a while but I was driven by the excitement to see the final result.

First I was a bit annoyed when the angle of the weave started to curve (especially in the case of the star one) but then I realised that it makes the pattern even more exciting.

Lastly, I cut these Christmas patterns out of the front of the cards and placed the paper weave behind. I was very pleased with the results and so were my friends and family.
