This Fern Coaster is hands down my favourite resin creation. It has a permanent place on my desk so I can always keep (half) an eye on it.
When I collected the little fern from our garden I didn’t have a purpose for it yet. I thought that I might press it, spray it gold and then display it in a frame. In the meantime however, I received some resin as a Christmas gift and with that my obsession began. I ordered some silicon moulds, filing tools, pigments and pastes, alcohol inks, a heatgun and so on. I experimented a lot and pretty much learned that I couldn’t tell resin what to do when it came to patterns. I did not like that. Some pieces still turned out amazing, but I do like an outcome that is 100% the way I want it to be.
So I thought, why don’t I make something that is less complicated? One colour only and a pressed leaf for instance. I poured a thin layer into the mould with some plack paste in it. I waited for a day or so then took my pressed fern leaf (which I already painted gold) and glued it down at a few spots so it would not move around.
I then filled up the mould with clear resin and when it was completely cured I filed the sides smooth and painted it with gold. I also glued a thin cork sheet to the bottom so it would not slide around.
