David, You’re a Trooper

‘David, You’re a Trooper’ was born out of this obsession I have about turning something already well-known into something new and cool. And if I can combine two already well-known things together, then it’s even better!

I’ve been working on a collection of european landmark makeovers and I thought Michelangelo’s David would have a well-deserved spot amongst the buildings. I don’t exactly remember how the idea came to me to give him a Stormtrooper helmet, but when it happened, it made me really excited. I couldn’t wait to make it happen.

It took a while to find a stock photo of the helmet where the angle is right. It needed to be photographed from below as David was photographed like that and if the angles don’t add up, then the image as a whole just won’t look right. When I finally found this helmet, it just looked so perfect compared to the previous ones that I tried out. Initially I wanted to give it a stone-like texture to blend in seamlessly with the rest of the statue, but no matter what method and blending mode I tried, it looked fake. So I left it as it was, except, that I adjusted the colours and added a bunch of shadows everywhere.

Lastly I edited the ceiling because there was this dark arch going across the picture and it stood out way too much. I wanted David to be in the focus without any discraction.

These posters are available for purchase here. There are many different sizes and frames to choose from!
