Colourful Pencil Illustration

I was hired by a gentleman to create and album cover for a song his daughters wrote about the current COVID-19 situation. He asked me to do a Colourful Pencil Illustration that resembles a child’s drawing a bit.

I started with the portrait of the girls, of which he sent a photo to me. I can’t remember the last time I made a conventional colourful pencil drawing to be honest. I don’t even think that I have anything of that sort in my portfolio. (I just checked – nothing indeed!) I could only hope that I would be able to create the artwork that my client had in mind. I was lucky to have this big box of pencils laying around in the drawer. None of us knew exactly how it got there. I swore that my boyfriend had it to design dishes (he is a chef) but he says he vividly remembers that he got it for me for Christmas once.

Anyhow, I drew the portrait and made it look a bit more complex on purpose in order to avoid a ‘too childish’ overall look. However, the rainbow and the little hearts do have the simple and colourful style of a child’s drawing, I think. There was a cloud, a tree and a house on it too at one point, but I was asked to ditch them at the end just so it wouldn’t be too overcrowded.

Other than the hand-drawings, I added a few vector elements and watercolour texture to pull the elements together and to give the artwork more dimension. Finally, I chose some playful and cute fonts to crown the image.
