I created these banners for Shift+Delete’s website. Since the company aims to do things their way rather than following the mess, the images had to reflect that as well.
I personally really don’t like the average banners that I keep coming across on a daily either. They’re way too overcrowded, they want to accomplish too much at once and that’s why they become tasteless and forgettable. They feature too many products, too many colours, too much text, too many fonts, just too much of everything as if one image was supposed to sell the entire range of products at once. Not that I’m any good at marketing but as an artist I’ll always prefer clean and strong images over the ‘too much’ ones. When there’s not enough emtpy space, I immediately feel out of breath.
Minimalistic(er) images on the other hand just make a great impact with a couple of well-selected visual items instead of paralysing one’s brain with too much information. As a potential customer I’m wired the same way: clean and interesting images are the ones that make me want to know more and see more.
Jeez, when did I become so critical? Basically what I’m just trying to say is that Shift+delete and I are a good match because we think alike and we are impressed by the same kind of images usually.
In the case of these banners I actually wanted to stick with one product image plus text plus this golden foil texture only. However, Shaun (founder of Shift+Delete) asked me to balance it out with one more colour just so the home page wouldn’t have too much gold on it considering the logo in the middle is the same colour and texture. So I added teal to the composition and that’s what we call compromise, kids.
