This Mug for my Dad’s birthday is the newest personal project I completed.
He works as an electrician and he always comes up with all sorts of electronic solutions and gadgets around the house so electricity isn’t only his profession but also his hobby. It only made sense to create a personalised gift for him with a pattern of a circuit board.
I found this really cool image on the internet that I pretty much just traced in Illustrator. I thought it would be really cool if it surrounded the text (that says ‘Happy Birthday’ in Hungarian, plus the date) but in order to be able to maintain a nice ratio on the mug, the pattern had to be extended. So I copied, pasted and mirrored the pattern but I didn’t want it to look too obviously mirrored. So I edited the areas where the two segments met and tried to blend them together seamlessly.
On the other half of the mug I wanted to incorporate an old photo of my dad when he was a little boy, hugging his dog. He gave the photo to me back then and asked me to press it onto a mug one day when I have the equipment for it in order to better preserve this old memory of his. We don’t have a heat press for mugs but there is a www.snappysnaps.co.uk nearby where they can create all sorts of personalised gifts using your own photos, or any kind of images, really. They work quite quick as well, I took the art work with me on a USB stick one morning, and they had the mug ready for me by the following day.
