Phone case for my friend

I designed a gift box for a client a few months ago. When I showed the final images to one of my friends, she was super fond of the pattern and said she would love to have a phone case like that.

As Christmas was coming up, I made a mental note and soon after created this pattern for her that was based on that gift box design but with a few modifications.

So back then my client asked me to create an art work that has a jungle vibe, features animals and plants and has a really lively look in general. Initially I sourced some vintage images from the online collection of The British Library that fit his description. I used many kinds of flowers and animals, even of the ‘scary’ kinds such as snakes, lizards, bats, insects and so on. I really liked how they looked but my client wanted a softer, ‘friendlier’ look so to say so these creatures had to go.

While I understood that these images were not too commercial or marketable from the general public’s point of view, it didn’t make me like them any less. On the contrary, actually. Not only as a designer but also as a customer I always preferred non-commercial stuff that stands out and that makes you do a double take. I know that these animals are considered scary looking but these illustrations of them were so beautiful! I especially loved the shape and the pattern of the snake, and the look of the bat with its wings spread wide open.

So for the phone case, I opened a gift box file from the early stages and left these creatures be. I moved all the elements closer to each other in order to be able to fit more of them on my art board. And finally I used www.mypersonalisedcase.co.uk where I could choose the right case for my friend’s phone, upload my own image and get the case delivered within a few days.

Oh and the photo was taken by my friend by the way. Well done, Judy! 🙂
