My Mum’s nameday was coming up and I wanted to make her a card with her monogram on it instead of just giving her a store bought card. I know, this is pretty much what I have to say in every blog post/personal project description but what can I say? I like this kind of sentimental stuff.
For those who couldn’t get over the fact that I mentioned ’nameday’, here is a fun fact: in Hungary we all have namedays that are like the little siblings of birthdays. To every day of the year belongs a certain name or names and so every lady who is called Erzsébet for instance celebrates their namedays on 19 November every year. My mum is called Erzsébet by the way so bringing up that example wasn’t just a coincidence. It was the result of thorough planning and forward thinking.
Some people (who are not familiar with the concept of namedays) think that this is just way too excess as far as celebrations and parties go. They might even use the expression ’party animals’ when referring to us, Hungarians. If you ask me I say that this is just jealousy talking. Shaun, I hope you’re reading this and recognise yourself. I have nothing but understanding in my heart for you.
Anyway regarding the card… I bought these blank card+envelope packages from Poundland ages ago and now I have to make sure that I’m making my money worthwhile by making cards for everyone on every occasion. Last year I was experimenting with some glue and glitter but this time it’s all about slight textures and geometric shapes. And hours spent bending over my desk. I can’t help but have flashbacks from University, spending days and nights building models with no sleep, no food just living off of determination and self-deception that I made accurate life choices and all this suffering will pay off one day. This project with the cards, however, was very different. There was no pressure, no tight deadline, just me wanting to create something for my mum to make her smile and feel loved.
